Is it time to assess your training skills capabilities?

In our ultra-competitive commercial world, measurability and cost-effectiveness are parameters for every aspect of operation – training and development expenditure should be no exception. Concepts such as return on investment, and validating and evaluating training are well understood, yet their regular application as an essential part of training methodology has become a norm for relatively few  organisations.

Recent research carried out by The Training Foundation showed that less than 15% of all training carried out is subject to any form of evaluation or assessment of business benefits; other industry studies have produced even lower results.

As we know, the trainer’s generic skills transfer abilities are of vital importance to learning. Yet if a general training culture exists where little assessment and measurement of results is going on, these can easily be taken for granted. Assessing a trainer’s classroom performance has tended to reflect the opinion of observers, which, being subjectively based on their own delivery style, is of questionable benefit. In fairness to those faced with such challenges, there has been an absence of any best practice, objective and consistent process for assessing training skills – until now!
